Our Commitment to Green Cleaning

ER9 Green Cleaning Statement & Product Listing

Established under Connecticut Public Act 09-81 and Conn. Gen. Stat. § 10-231g, our district proudly implements a comprehensive green cleaning program across all school buildings and facilities:

  • Since July 1, 2011, only cleaning products certified through Department of Administrative Services (DAS)–approved third-party programs—such as Green Seal or EcoLogo—are used. These include general-purpose, bathroom, glass, carpet cleaners, hand soaps, and floor finishes/strippers, designed to minimize harmful impacts on human health and the environment

  • Excluded from use are disinfectants, sanitizers, or any antimicrobial products regulated by FIFRA, unless specifically needed and handled by trained personnel

To ensure transparency and community engagement, the district:

  • Provides annual written statements (since October 1, 2010, and every year thereafter) to staff, and, upon request, to parents and guardians. These communications outline:

    1. The names and types of green cleaning products used and their locations.

    2. The schedule for their application.

    3. Contact information for the Director of Facilities and Operations

  • Includes the mandated statement:

“No parent, guardian, teacher or staff member may bring into the school facility any consumer product which is intended to clean, deodorize, sanitize or disinfect.”

  • Posts both the program notice and periodic facility reports on the district and individual school websites

  • Reports to the State Commissioner every five years on the condition of facilities and green cleaning implementation as part of broader facility and indoor air quality reporting

Why It Matters

By integrating green cleaning into our maintenance approach, we safeguard indoor air quality and reduce exposure to harsh chemicals that might trigger asthma or other health concerns. You can read more at CT.gov - Green Cleaning Information. This ensures:

  • Healthier learning environments for children, faculty, custodians, and all building occupants.

  • Ongoing community trust and transparency, supported by accessible reporting and proactive communication.

  • Alignment with state guidelines and third-party certified standards—demonstrating our commitment to environmental stewardship at every level of operations.

The Result: Clean, Safe, and Responsible Schools

Our Green Cleaning Program reflects the core values that have made our district a trusted educational institution: care, innovation, and a forward-looking approach to both education and stewardship. We are proud that our history of learning is now complemented by a history of health and environmental responsibility—and that this legacy will benefit generations to come.
