  • Professional Development

The purpose of the World Language curriculum is to ensure that all students will develop proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in at least one language other than English, and will understand the cultures of that language. To that end, various opportunities for training and on-going development of the curriculum master plan will be provided. Three professional days for the K-12 Curriculum Committee are December 12, 2001, February 13, 2002, and April 10, 2002. During these meetings, the teachers will continue to develop the curriculum according to the curriculum master plan. Also, teachers will discuss and revise common performance-based learning assessments. Three professional days for all middle school teachers of World Languages are October 11, 2001, January 17, 2002, and May 16, 2002. At these meetings, teachers will be trained in evaluating student work through tuning protocols and will discuss the use of the common performance-based learning assessments developed by the K-12 Curriculum Committee. Five professional days for teachers at Joel Barlow High School are held throughout the year. During this time, teachers will be reformatting curriculum guides to align with NEASAC standards.

Throughout the year, teachers attend various workshops. They also maintain memberships in COLT, AATF, ACTFUL, Alliance Francaise, American Classical League and Classical Association of New England. These associations provide various training opportunities for teachers.

Consultants are used to assist in curriculum development. The World Language Department anticipates the adoption of a new textbook series in French and Spanish beginning with the 2002-2003 academic school year. Consultants from the publishing companies will provide workshops on the use of the series.
