Fifth Grade
Homework Policy
Why we assign
homework:
We believe homework is an important
aspect of a student’s total education.
Homework is critical in teaching the following:
Ø Responsibility
Ø Ability to work
independently
Ø Time management and
organizational skills
Ø Skill and knowledge of
subject areas
Ø Establishment of solid study
skills that will serve a student throughout his/her academic career and in the
future in his/her professional career.
When homework
will be assigned:
Homework will be assigned Monday through Thursday. Students should be able to complete all
homework within approximately 60 minutes.
If homework is completed before that time frame, he/she is to read independently. Occasionally there will be projects requiring
long-range student planning.
Students’
homework responsibilities:
We expect students’ homework
to be completed neatly and turned in on time.
We expect the students to do the homework on their own and ask for help
only after they have given it their best effort.
Parents’/Guardians’
homework responsibilities:
You play an important role
in making homework a positive experience for your child. We ask that you make homework a top
priority. You must provide the necessary
supplies, a setting conducive to studying and a daily study time. Please support your child with praise. If your child is having a difficult time and
did not finish an assignment, you must write a note to the teacher.
If a student
does not complete homework:
If your child chooses not to submit
the required homework on time, he/she will receive a late check. During the first quarter if your child
accumulates a total of four late checks, you will receive a phone call. In subsequent marking periods your child will
receive a 5th grade detention upon the fourth late check. For each additional late check (5, 6, 7 etc.)
your child will receive one detention per check. A slip will be sent home with your child
notifying you of the date and time of the detention.
