The Changing Role and Status of Women in China Grade Level: 9-12
China existed as a feudal society for nearly 3,000 years and taught that women were inferior to men. With the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, the status of women in China changed dramatically. Arranged marriages were eliminated, and widows were allowed to remarry. The state protected equal rights for women, practiced equal pay for equal work and provided equal opportunity for women's training and promotion.
