| The
culminating event for Reaching Beyond was a Southern Supper where
students and their families enjoyed such traditional delicacies as
Southern Fried Chicken, Hoppin' John, Collard Greens, Succotash, and
Biscuits. Parents generously provided appetizers and desserts.
All were treated to an interactive musical performance led by members of
the African-American troupe, Children of the Drum. Harrison
Buster and Ralph Williams displayed, demonstrated and played a variety of
African instruments which included drums, flutes, and shakers, to name
only a few. Amir Rashidd, the Storyteller, joined Harrison and Ralph
in mesmerizing the audience with the folktales and music. Young and
old alike enjoyed the presentation and gained an appreciation and
understanding of the African-American culture and its role in American
life. Harrison Buster and
Ralph Williams, whose homes are in Bridgeport, Connecticut, are
accomplished musicians for whom music has always been a way of life. |
