The Miracle Worker
A Collaborative Effort between the 7th Grade T.A.G. Program at John Winthrop School and a 7th Grade Language Arts Class 

Simulation



You will work in groups of three in the following roles:

1. Blind folder/observer

2. Teacher

3. Pupil

Blind folder/observer’s role: Blindfold the pupil with a scarf. As the lesson progresses, watch both participants intently. Be prepared to report on their actions, gestures, and apparent moods.

Teacher’s role: Read the task sheet carefully. You have five minutes in which to teach your pupil the assigned task. YOU MAY NOT SPEAK OR USE ANY SOUNDS. Your pupil must be able to perform the task independently at the end of the lesson.

Pupil’s role: You will not be able to see, nor will you hear any instructions. You must figure out the task and complete it on your own at the end of five minutes.

Task: At the conclusion of the simulation (five minute time limit), write a reaction paragraph of approximately 6-8 sentences. Include answers to the following questions:

What did you think about this experiment?

Did you enjoy doing it?

What was difficult?

How would you have done things differently?

Conclude your paragraph by answering this question: What must it have been like for Annie Sullivan (teacher of Helen Keller who was blind and deaf) to try to teach Helen Keller new skills on a daily basis?

The pupil will be given a piece of paper and a pen/pencil. At the end of five minutes, he/she must be able to do the following with no prompt from you…

1. Hold the pen/pencil in his left hand.

2. Draw this figure in the center of the page.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

3. Fold the paper in thirds vertically.
