The
Easton Public Library and Helen Keller Middle School Media Center are
currently working on a collaborative project entitled Connecting
Cultures. The goal of this initiative is to promote understanding of
other cultures and ethnic groups. There will be a variety of programs
presented as well as opportunities for sixth graders to work
independently. Through this program, students will be exposed to other
cultures and recognize that libraries play an important role in their
own development and their lives. For requirements and listing of
programs, click here.
Students will be offered the
opportunity to earn points commensurate with their level of involvement
in the project. For example, they could write and illustrate their own
multi-cultural story, create a visual depicting a multi-cultural book
they read, and they will be writing a journal entry about a special
object of their own heritage which will be bound into a book. To
encourage students to fully participate in this project, there will be a
raffle drawing for prizes during our culminating event, The
Connecting Cultures Smorgasbord on March 30th where
families will come together to taste food of many cultures and enjoy a
performance by a multi-cultural storyteller and drummer.
We received a grant from The
Reader’s Digest Foundation as well as assistance from ECEF (Easton
Cultural Education Fund) that will cover the costs of the program.
Students will enjoy a full day of activities on Thursday, March 9th,
including a panel representing India, Greece, and Russia; a food
demonstration from Holland; a bagpipe presentation; a hands-on Origami
activity and an Afro-American storyteller.
