Dear Helen Keller Middle School
Student, The Helen Keller
Middle School Student Council is a service organization. Student Council
provides opportunities for its members to develop leadership skills as
they organize and run service projects for the school and the community.
The Student Council is also responsible for coordinating social
activities to promote school spirit and school pride.
Student Council membership
consists of student representatives from grades 5 through 8. Each
homeroom will elect two representatives. This election will take place
after the election of Student Council Officers.
Qualifications for membership
- Members must receive a
positive rating from their respective grade level teaching team.
- Members must have a passing
grade in each class.
- Members must be available to
attend weekly morning meetings.
- Members must display
respectful conduct at all times.
- A member may be removed if
the member’s behavior or performance reflects poorly on the
individual as a representative of the Helen Keller Middle School
Student Council
The elected officers and their
duties are:
President
Prepares an agenda for the
meeting
Presides over Student Council
Meetings
Guides the discussion, seeing
that all members have an equal chance to be heard
Represents the Student
Council at other functions
Oversees the various
committees
Vice President
Presides over Student Council
meeting in the absence of president
Represents the interests of
their particular grade level
In charge of maintaining
committee lists
Monitors Committee work
Secretary
Takes roll call and keeps
record and attendance
Takes minutes during the
meeting, rewrites them and submits them to the advisors
Reports on and answers all
correspondence
Treasurer
Maintains Student Council
financial records
Verifies the financial
records with the advisors
Reports on the income,
expenditures, and balance at each meeting
Public Relations Coordinator
Oversees all publicity for
Student Council activities
In charge of maintaining a
Public Relations Committee
Monitors the Public Relations
Committee
The slate of officers will be
chosen as follows:
President: Student from
grade 8
Vice President: Student
from each grade level (grades 5-8)
Secretary: Student from
grade 6, 7, or 8
Treasurer:
Student from grade 5 or 6
Student from grade 7 or 8
Public Relations Coordinator:
Student from grade 7
Student from grade 8
Any student wishing to run for any
of the above offices should submit a speech (no more than 200 words)
stating which position you are applying for and explaining why you are
best qualified for that position. Please submit the speeches to Mrs.
Maggi (room 100) or Mrs. Ustie (room 104) by 2:40 P.M. on Monday,
September 27, 2004.
