The focus of the sixth grade mathematics curriculum is on rational numbers. Communication and problem solving skills are interspersed throughout the curriculum. The program begins with a review of concepts and skills involving whole numbers and their applications.  It is followed by the instructional units listed below.

 ADVANCED MATHEMATICS

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Advanced Mathematics course is an accelerated course combining grade 6 and grade 7  mathematics.  Fifth grade students are recommended for Advanced Mathematics by their fifth grade teachers based upon day to day student achievement, consistency of effort, CMT-5 scores, OLSAT scores, and performance on a placement test.  Students selected for Advanced Mathematics must be able to demonstrate a superior level of understanding and application of the fifth grade mathematics curriculum.  The course proceeds at a pace suitable for outstanding students, and requires nightly homework and review.  Each unit begins with a brief review, followed by application, enrichment, and problem solving.  The course includes the same objectives as grade 6 mathematics, with the following enrichments:

Decimals and Whole Numbers

  • Finding Area of Quadrilaterals and other Polygons

  • Finding Fractional Areas of Circles

  • Using Scientific Notation

Statistics

  • Measures of Central Tendency-Mean, Median, Mode, with Data Analysis
